    • Olive Oil in excessive amounts – cooking is fine, salad dressing not.
    • Any other vegetable oils that are liquid at room temperature.
    • Hydrogenated fats.
    • Soybeans or soy products.
    • Margarine or fake butter products.
  • Consume the Following Fats:
    • Real butter, ghee, coconut oil, palm kernel oil or lard.
    • Free Range Eggs from happy chickens.
    • Grass Fed Beef.
    • Pork from happy pigs.
    • Raw cows milk or goats milk.
    • Cheese and Yogurt.
    • Fish Oil Supplements.
  • Start off slow with keto and gradually add more and more as you go.
  • Eat smaller meals.
  • Take Ox Bile Supplements and/or digestive enzymes to help digest those fats. When Ox bile is taken with a meal it provides a highly concentrated source of bile which takes the place of the bile that you would have secreted had you had a gallbladder.

Good evening everyone, I’ve been searching for others who’ve had the VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) or Gastric Sleeve surgery who have also tried losing weight using a Keto diet. Anyone out there with this experience?

I’m interested in trying it, but also wary because my bariatric doctor is extremely against any diet with fat in it at all, he wants me to keep every day under 20 grams of fat.

I’ve been doing good so far with that, keeping under 1200 cals and 20g of fat per day, and since the surgery I’ve lost 120lbs.

However, my husband is on the Keto diet and is doing well, but our grocery shopping is on the extreme opposite ends and often our bill will be higher.

It would be nice to be able to eat along with my husband the same/similar foods and still keep up with the weight loss. Since I cannot eat very much, I can see keeping under 1200 cals per day, but the fat content would go through the window.

Any advice? Anyone else with the same or similar surgery have success with Keto?

Even though the HCG diet limits both carbohydrates and calories to a great extent, hunger is dramatically reduced compared to other diets. The main reason why hunger is limited is because of the effect of the HCG hormone, and the body’s consistent state of ketosis. The ketogenic fat burning metabolic state that occurs on the HCG diet can result in rapid fat loss up to 40 pounds or more over a six week period of time, and it is one of the fastest and most effective ways to lose weight safely.

How long has it been since your VSG? If you are only 1-1.5 yrs post op I would seriously reconsider going keto. The amount of fat you need to eat on keto will require more space/capacity than you’re pouch can hold now. Even if it’s all in hidden oils in fat bombs, it will either require more space, or just make you feel ill and icky. I’m on keto now and could not eat this much fat when I was less than two years out. Yuck!

I had VSG in Oct 2011. It worked and I lost loads, but as old habits started to creep back in (read: sugar relapse) I started to notice a little weight gain. No way did I go through that surgery for nothing, so I’m on a good eating plan again! But at almost 3 yrs out my pouch is slightly larger than it was post surgery, and I can tolerate heavier and richer foods. If you follow a true keto plan I think you might find it tough to eat the adequate amounts of fats early on.
