While no beneficial effect of eating Marmite was found for those with depressive symptoms (looks like I’ll have to keep popping that fluoxetine), the researchers did not a ‘significant improvement’ in anxiety and stress for those who consumed yeast-based spreads.

Spreads fortified with vitamin B12, such as Marmite, were found to be more effective in reducing stress and anxiety.

‘Vitamin B supplementation appears to be an important additive supplementary source to improved stress and anxiety,’ stated the researchers.

This makes sense – deficiencies in vitamin B have previously been associated with poor mental health, with vitamins B6, B9 and B12 working to regulate neurotransmitters.
